Ancient cultures often linked the arrival of spring to mythical tales of rebirth and resurrection. Detox practices were integral to these ceremonies, prompting the question of why spring is a good time for a detox?
It’s the first day of spring. In the greenhouse, the lush green leaves of lettuce, arugula, and spinach are bountiful. I always crave their fresh taste.
The wisdom of the season
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is linked to the wood element, representing balanced growth. During this season, seeds establish roots in the earth for grounding and shoot upward towards the sun.
Detox – The good, the bad and the ugly
When contemplating a lifestyle change and growth, it’s advisable to align with nature’s gradual growth patterns. By doing so, the aim is for your transformation to be slow and well-grounded, as dramatic changes tend not to endure.
A few years back, I delved into researching detox programs and stumbled upon one known as the “Master Cleanse.” Despite my commitment to practicing what I preach, I gave it a shot.
Let me tell you, it wreaked havoc on my digestive and hormonal balance. Consequently, it took years to regain equilibrium, and truth be told, I didn’t feel any better despite all the effort.
Now, as we transition into spring, it’s worth noting that the organs associated with this season are the liver and the gallbladder. Remarkably, the liver, being the largest organ in the body, holds the fascinating ability to renew itself.
The liver is the body’s chemist:
- It produces bile essential for fat digestion
- It stores nutrients and releases them into the blood when needed
- It manages the breakdown of toxins so they can be removed from the body.
Supporting healthy liver function is vital in all seasons. The spring just gives us the nutrients that the liver craves in abundance.
The web is filled with detox programs that last from 10 days to a couple of weeks. I ask myself.”
and then what?”
Does it sound reasonable that you can consume highly processed food year-round, expose your body to toxins in your home and body care, neglect self-care, and then engage in a 10-day detox expecting to eliminate all toxins?
As an herbalist, I promote a detox lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of reducing toxin exposure consistently throughout the year. This involves supporting the organs responsible for managing and eliminating toxins from the body on a daily basis, regardless of the season.
I am very clear with my clients that there is no hocus pocus magical formula that will cleanse your body, help you lose weight, and increase your energy reserve. These results can be achieved only through a clean lifestyle.
Spring is the best time of the year to start a detox because, energetically, it is time for physical, emotional, and mental renewal.
It is time to manifest the new you emerging from the womb of wintering.
