The Health Benefits Of A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep has become a scarce commodity. Sleep is not a priority in a culture that values being busy with careers, children, and mobile devices. Add the sheer amount of stress that is part of modern life, which can lead to sleep disturbances, and you get a sleep-deprived society. With that in mind, I ask what the benefits of a good night’s sleep are.

Seven to nine hours of sleep at night is essential for a healthy adult’s well-being. When you consistently don’t sleep seven to nine hours a night, you go into a sleep debt, and like the bank, your body will ask you to cash out your debt.

The sleep cycle is regulated by the circadian cycle. In the morning, a spike of cortisol wakes you up, but as the day goes on, cortisol levels slowly decrease in the blood, and melatonin levels increase.

Sleep quality is as important as the number of hours you get a shut-eye.

The 4 stages of sleep

There are four stages to sleep, and each has its role;

  • REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep 
  • NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) sleep that is divided into three stages.

We cycle through these four stages at night four to six times. Each cycle lasts for about 90 minutes.

What is REM sleep?

REM sleep is the stage of sleep where most dreams happen. It is about 25% of your sleeping time and is vital for emotional processing, memory integration, and brain development. Babies spend most of their sleeping time in REM sleep.

What is NREM sleep?

NREM sleep can be divided into three stages:

  • In the N1 sleep stage, heartbeat, eye movements, brain waves, and breathing activity begin to taper down, and motor movements diminish.
  • In the N2 sleep stage, breathing, heartbeat, and motor movement continue to lessen. You spend about half of your sleeping time in the N2 stage.
  • N3, or deep sleep, is when the body regeneration is at its peak. Tissue, muscles, and bones are healed, glucose metabolism balance is restored, the immune and endocrine systems are reset, and the glymphatic system clears the brain of metabolic waste.

The benefits of a good night’s sleep

  • The brain clean-up during the N3 stage of sleep is critical for your ability to think clearly and focus. Sleep debt is a common cause of brain fog. REM sleep, as mentioned, is vital for memory integration. 
  • When in deep sleep, the body reduces stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, giving the body a chance to restore balance.
  • The immune system ramps up the production of immune cells that recruit cells to fight inflammation, infection, and trauma, therefore healing the body.
  • Giving the body a break and slowing down life processes such as breathing and heartbeat allows it to regenerate itself. No wonder you feel more energized in the morning.
  • Sleep is essential for mood and emotional regulation. A study found that sleepless people tend to see threats everywhere. 
  • Insomnia is associated with high blood pressure and heart disease. Sleep debt increases your body’s stress response, which puts a burden on the cardiovascular system.
  • During sleep, there is an increase in growth hormone. Growth hormones initiate cell regeneration in the skin and hair and regulate appetite. If you have trouble losing weight, sleep debt might be the culprit, and they repair muscle wear and tear damage.
  • Sleep debt has a profound effect on aging, too. Not getting enough sleep over time has a cumulative impact that accelerates aging by cognitive decline, increasing inflammation and causing the skin to age faster.

To sum it up, you could really benefit from a good night’s sleep.
