Is Celery Juice Essential For A Detox?

Is celery juice an essential part of a detox program?

If you look at detox programs online, many recommend juicing celery as part of their detox regime. But is celery juice an essential part of a detox program?

Celery is part of the Apiaceae botanical family. Other family members are carrots, parsley, parsnip, fennel, caraway, anise, cumin, dill, and cilantro. The food and herbs in the Apiaceae family contain a group of chemical compounds called Coumarins.

When you eat celery or, for that matter, any plant in the Apiaceae family (legumes contain coumarins, too), the Coumarins that are found in it are easily absorbed by the blood and have a systemic effect on your body.

Coumarins act on the junction between the immune and lymphatic systems. To understand what they do, you need to understand a little about the lymphatic system’s role in your body. 

The lymphatic system is your garbage-clearing truck combined with the border patrol.

The fluids in your body are one ocean, but they look a little different in different places and have different functions. 

The main three bodies of water are:

  • The fluids of the blood carry nutrients (including oxygen) into every cell in your body. 
  • The fluids within the cells allow them to carry out all the chemical reactions that make them work. 
  • The cells are bathed in salty water called the interstitial fluid or the water between the cells.

While nutrients move from the blood capillaries to the cells, waste products move from the cell to the interstitial space. Then the fluids in the interstitial cells become the lymph. They are collected from all body parts and are emptied into the bloodstream. The “garbage” is then taken to the digestive tract and is eliminated by the stool. 

The fluids of the interstitial cells are clogged with:

  • Waste products of cell metabolism
  • Bacteria and viruses
  • Dead cells

That makes the interstitial fluid a little condensed like gel which means that the flow of the lymphatic fluids is slowed down. If too many toxins are in the lymphatic fluid, stagnation could develop, and the toxins might leak back into the blood.

One more thing you need to know about the lymphatic system is that it is the primary training camp for immune cells and their home camp. 

What does Coumarin do?

Coumarins spotlight proteins and invite white blood cells called macrophages to digest them. Once these proteins are digested, the lymphatic fluid is much clearer and less condensed, so it can easily flow and relieve the tissue from toxins. 

Celery juice is much more concentrated than eating celery because you remove all the fibers when you juice. Also, you can drink much more celery juice than you can eat celery sticks before you feel satiated.  

However, juicing celery has a couple of disadvantages;

  • Fibers are essential for trapping fats (cholesterol) and toxins in your gut and eliminating them with the stool. So although celery juice will help move the toxins into your gut, juicing celery will reduce the elimination of these toxins from the body.
  • Fibers feed your gut bacteria. Gut bacteria play an essential role in your immune system and gut-brain axis.
  • Digestion starts in the mouth; by chewing on your food and mixing it with the enzymes in your spit, you learn something about the make of the food you put in your mouth. Taste is information that is vital to your digestive process. By bypassing the mouth, you deprive the body of important information. 

Other benefits of celery:

  • Celery contains apigenin, a flavonoid that is a potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral activity, and blood pressure reduction. 
  • Celery contains luteolin, a flavonoid that may induce cancer cell apotheosis (self-destruction) and prevent cancer.
  • Celery contains antioxidants that remove free radicals that are waste by-products created when the cell produces energy.  

Like many other fruits and vegetables containing chemical compounds that support our body’s innate ability to detox, celery will be an excellent part of any detox program. Still, it should be the whole plant with the fibers. 

Although celery is an excellent addition to any detox program, it does not come instead of a lifestyle change that reduces your exposure to toxins.
