Four Herbs 4 Cough

Feb 21, 2022 | Herbalism Blog

Winter often brings the symphony of coughs, a common winter woe. It typically starts with one person and quickly spreads through workplaces and schools. Cough can cause pain, distraction, irritation, and even stealing your sleep right when you need it to for heal. Therefore, finding relief from a persistent cough is crucial. Here are four herbs to relieve cough.

It’s essential to recognize that a cough is not an ailment itself. It is rather the body’s immune response to expel foreign pathogens irritating the lungs. The focus should be on facilitating a productive cough that aids the body in eliminating toxins from the lungs.

By understanding cough as a mechanism for detoxification, the approach shifts towards supporting the body’s natural processes.

Since cough is not the cause of the dis-ease but a symptom, you want to understand the underlying conditions that create the cough. Herbalists call these conditions the energetics or the pattern that the life force (vitality) moves through the body.

Although there are six patterns of the vital forces, two are most relevant to coughs:

  1. Wet Congested Cough: Characterized by an abundance of mucus in the respiratory tract, the mucus tends to be thick and heavy.
  2. Dry, Scratchy Cough: Signifying insufficient mucus production.

In some instances, during a cold, an individual may experience a wet congested cough for a few days, followed by the disappearance of other symptoms. However, a lingering dry cough might persist for several weeks.

You Do Not Want to Suppress Your Cough! You Want to Support Your Body Self Healing Process.

How to support your body’s self-healing process?

For a wet and congested cough, incorporating warm, drying, and relaxing herbs is beneficial. These herbs not only provide warmth but also help thin the mucus. They make it easier for the body to expel pathogens. Aromatic herbs are particularly effective in this regard.

In the case of a dry and scratchy cough, the focus shifts to herbs that support mucus production. These herbs, known as demulcents, are primarily cooling and moistening. They offer relief for the irritation associated with dry coughs.

Aromatic herbs for wet congested cough:

Aromatic herbs are herbs that contain essential oils. They work in ways that might seem contacting but are not. In the case of cough aromatic herbs will first makie the cough stronger, deeper, and more productive, followed by relaxing the muscles around the lungs.

Herbalist Guido Masse writes about the effect of aromatic on smooth muscles:

“Aromatic plants have the ability to both stimulate and relax – and that, depending on the context, either effect may be elicited.”

Another quality of aromatic herbs is that they are antibacterial and antiviral, making them an excellent medicine for the winter.

Two aromatic herbs for cough:

Thyme:

thyme

Thyme, a familiar culinary herb, holds a rich medicinal history. It has been traditionally employed for alleviating symptoms of bronchitis, whooping cough, and upper airway catarrhs. Research indicates that a syrup combining thyme and ground ivy reduce the inflammatory symptoms of acute bronchitis

Moreover, thyme and ivy can reduce cough in adults with acute bronchitis. The syrup was found to be safe and effective in treating children and adolescents with acute bronchitis.

“It purgeth the body of phlegm and is an excellent remedy for the shortness of breath.” –Nicholas Culpeper.

Hyssop:

hyssop, basket

Hyssop, a warming and stimulating herb with a pungent taste, has been traditionally employed to address stagnation. It is used specifically in conditions where the mucus is thick. As a diaphoretic, hyssop, elevates the body’s temperature and facilitate the elimination of toxins through sweating. Its benefits extend to inflammation of the airways and chronic asthma.

Aromatic herbs like hyssop are best utilized in the form of tea, infused honey, or as an oxymel for optimal effectiveness.

Two Demulcent herbs for dried cough:

Marshmallow:

marshmallow

Marshmallow, known for its moistening and cooling properties, is my primary choice for addressing a dry and irritating cough. Rich in polysaccharides, the sugars in marshmallows create a gel that provides moisture and soothing relief to irritated tissues upon contact with water. Marshmallow root has proven highly effective in alleviating chronic dry cough.

Use marshmallow leaves in tea with other herbs for colds. Additionally, a cold infusion of the root produces a healing slimy substance, although its ingestion might be challenging for some.

Mullein:

mullein leaves

Mullein leaves, with their soft and velvety texture, reflect their soothing impact within the body, softening rough edges. This herb is specifically tailored for dry coughs that resonate throughout the entire body.

An infusion of mullein proves beneficial for addressing dry, harsh, hacking coughs. It supports weak lungs and kidneys, and provide relief to the nervous system. It is particularly effective for conditions such as hoarseness, bronchitis, whooping cough, asthma, hay fever, and general respiratory issues.

To harness the benefits of mullein, create an infusion by adding a handful of crushed mullein leaves to a quart mason jar, filling it with warm water. Cover, let it sit for 20 minutes, and then straining before consumption. Note that mullein leaves are covered with tiny silver hairs. To avoid potential irritation, pressing the tea in a french press is recommended, as suggested by herbalist Jim McDonald.
